SIDE: In the center of each of the triangle shapes, I repoussed a “dimple” in order to shift the focal point. This worked out well as there is significant “movement” of reflections as the viewer changes the viewing angle. Additionally, the textures on these surfaces are not purely shiny but have some added texture. The chasing on this section was tricky, principally along both the upper and lower edges, where the two sides of the triangles come together.
BOTTOM: The design element on the bottom is pretty straightforward. The addition of the secondary or shading line between the central design and the background really sets off the design well and represents a degree of risk for the chaser as a mistake here could have ruined the piece. This portion of the box came out very well.
TOP: Again, a fairly straightforward design in a five-pointed star pattern. There is some good chasing on this element. The central design is cleanly separated from the background. The very lightly stippled surface effect on the background sets up the high gloss of the central designs well.
A word about the High Gloss Finish: As is apparent from the larger body of my work, high gloss or shiny surfaces are not something I personally like, but there is something in me that wants to prove two things: Number one, that I can chase a high gloss surface and do it well, which goes to prove; number two, that I don’t normally use it by choice not limitations of skill.
THOUGHTS: This is a small box, a bit less than middling in diameter and shallow depth. It slips well into a pocket. Placing the more complex design on the bottom was both an aesthetic and practical decision. Practical, because the twelve-segmented star will show wear less than the five-segmented one; aesthetic, because it offers a double impression. I do like that “Wow, look at the bottom” response from those holding my work. Technically I am very pleased with this box: as an example of smooth shiny chased surfaces, it displays well the qualities that this type of surface has. The one aspect of the whole box I would alter would be to make the sides of the box about 3mm higher. The basic silversmithing is good, the chasing and repousse very satisfying.
